Maroons Take The Doubleheader

Maroons Take The Doubleheader

CHICAGO – The University of Chicago Maroons defeated the Mount Mary University Blue Angels in both doubleheaders today at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. The Maroons took the first game 8-0 and game two 12-2 making the Blue Angels 2-11 on the season.

The Blue Angels began game one putting the pressure on the opposition's defense. Madison Ledda (Fr./Tracy, Calif.) drew the one out walk, then a double by Peyton Davis (So./Tracy, Calif.) gave MMU two runners in scoring position. MMU stranded the runners after a hard hit ball to third and a strike out.

The Maroons earned a pair of runs in the second inning off of three hits including a double and a well-placed RBI bunt single by Devan Parkison. UC added six more runs (four earned runs) in the fourth inning forcing the short game.

It was in the second game that the Blue Angels bats got home their first runs since their breakout offensive game against Grinnell College. After the Maroons scored an early 10 in the first two innings, the Katy Groth (Fr./Racine, Wis.) singled to right field. That is when Ashley Contreras (So./College Station, Texas) launched her first homerun of the season.

"We played some good stretches of softball today against a very tough team," Head Blue Angels Coach Tim Edwards said. "Ashley [Contreras] was a warrior today! Pitching both games against a good team says a lot. Adding that homerun in game two was really impressive!"

The Blue Angels now will wait until Fri. Apr. 15 when they finally get to host their first home game of the season. North Central University (Minn.) will be the guests as the Blue Angels look to start their homestand at Wisconsin Lutheran Field.
