Big Bats Fall Short

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University softball team lost both games in their doubleheader against Trinity International today at Neumann Family Softball Field. The losses make the Blue Angels 2-13 on the season while moving the Trojans to 9-19.

Despite the 11-4 win for the Trojans in game one, the Blue Angels in fact outhit their opponent 11-to-10 through seven innings. Five extra errors for MMU coupled with leaving nine baserunners stranded was the difference.

After trailing 2-0, the Blue Angels came back in the first inning scoring one run off of three hits. Then after blanking the competition in the second inning, MMU added two more runs courtesy of freshman Madison Ledda's double to deep center field.

The Trojans answered back with four runs in the top half of the third inning. Only one run was earned after two fielding errors opened the door for TIU. After a clutch two out RBI single by Taylor Yordt (Fr./Omaha, Neb.), the Blue Angels surrendered three more unearned runs ending the game at 11-4.

Jess Runge (Jr./Freedom, Wis.) went a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate in game one, with a triple and two runs scored. Teammate Nikki Festge (Sr./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) moves to 1-6 with the loss, surrendering 10 hits, 11 runs, and three earned runs while striking out eight batters.

Game two saw more Blue Angels offense, but the Trojans bats were responsible for nine hits in the 5-3 win for TIU.

A four hit opening frame for the Trojans led to three early runs. Ashley Contreras (So./College Station, Texas) got the start in the circle, and with the help of the Blue Angels defense, MMU held TIU scoreless for the next four innings.

Festge added a run in the bottom half of the fourth with an RBI single to right center. Following a solo homerun by Trojan Jessie Stanton in the top of the sixth, Festge added another run off of a deep double down the left side.

Blue Angel Katy Groth (Fr./Racine, Wis.) added another run in the sixth as well, making the score 4-3 Trojans.

MMU got one hit in the seventh on an infield single by Peyton Davis (Fr./Tracy, Calif.), but could not close the 5-3 gap.

Now the Blue Angels will look to rival Maranatha Baptist as they head to Watertown, Wis. on Sat. Apr. 16. First pitch for tomorrow's games are set for 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm.
