Bats Bring Blue Angels Win

WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Mount Mary University softball team swept rival Maranatha Baptist in their doubleheader today. Following a seven game losing streak, the pair of wins makes the Blue Angels 4-13 on the season while making the Sabercats 4-12.

The bats have been resurgent as of late for MMU, that trend continued into today's doubleheader. Game one saw the Blue Angels with 12 hits as they battled their way to a 10-5 victory.

"We did a lot of things today that we haven't done all year. Players shuffled around the lineup and were in different positions than they are used to." Head Coach Tim Edwards explained, "They really did a good job! I am very happy with the effort and execution that was there today."

The win in game one came from two big scoring innings for MMU. A five run second inning all got started with a Shandrieka Richardson (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.) single. Ashley Contreras (So./College Station, Texas) hit a bases load double that scored two runners. Peyton Davis (Fr./Tracy, Calif.) followed that up with a two RBI single. Payton Hintz (So./Almond, Wis.) added her second RBI of the game in the very next at-bats.

The Blue Angels scattered three runs in the top half of the seventh off of a couple wild pitches from Brooke Campbell.

Contreras finished the game leading in the circle and plate. Hitting 3-of-4 from the plate with three RBIs and three run, Contreras finished with a season high 12 strikeouts while surrendering five runs, only one run was earned.

The Blue Angels kept it rolling in the second game as they scored nine runs off of 16 hits. The 9-6 win for MMU saw many big offensive performances along with some great defensive efforts.

"Katy Groth did a really good job in center field today." Coach Edwards went on, "She ran down some balls that were well hit, and made plays when we needed it."

Groth also added a 2-of-3 performance from the plate scoring two runs. Teammate Jess Runge (Jr./Freedom, Wis.) had another 4-of-4 day in the batter's box with two runs and two RBIs.

Rookies Madison Ledda (Fr./Tracy, Calif) and Taylor Yordt (Fr./Omaha, Neb.) both added multi-hit games on their way to the MMU win. Ledda went 3-of-5 from the plate with a double and four RBIs. Yordt finished 2-of-3 batting, with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Blue Angels will head to Rockford, Ill. to face the Regents on Tue. Apr. 19. The doubleheader has start times of 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Check for updates at mtmaryathletics.com.
