Lumberjills Defeat Blue Angels

Lumberjills Defeat Blue Angels

MILWAUKEE – Tonight at the Bloechl Center, the Mount Mary University Blue Angels lost to Northland College 73-61. The victory takes the Lumberjills to 1-1 on the young season and moves the Blue Angels to 0-5.

The contest went back and forth, but NC seemed to pull away just a little every time the Blue Angels went on a run. The Lumberjills jumped out to the early lead, moving in front by 12. MMU did not give up, cutting the lead to 22-17, but NC went on a few short runs to finish the half 35-26 Lumberjills up.

In the second half, fans saw much of the same effort on both sides. NC used the cushion provided from the first half, while the Blue Angels whittled down as much as they could, but never got any closer than five points. Once the score hit 49-44, NC took control and outscored the Blue Angels in the final 10 minutes finishing 73-61.

The Lumberjills have been known to fire a lot of long distance shots. Even with first year head coach Daryle Tucker tweaking the system a bit, NC still seems partial to the three-ball. Tonight was a little more reserved than game one for NC, but of the 15 three point attempts by the Lumberjills, Brianna Tody (So./Ashland, Wis.) made all five beyond the arc. Tody finished with a game leading 21 points and 13 rebounds.

For the Blue Angels, a lot of solid individual performances on the evening. Two double-doubles, one for Becky Onan (Fr./Grafton, Wis.) with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Chrisandra Freeman (Fr./Cedar Rapids, Iowa) had 13 pts and 10 rebs. Leading the way offensively was the latest addition to the Blue Angels roster, Abigail Radish (So./Muskego, Wis.) had 17 points.

MMU continues to improve on the season. The young roster has seen a lot of change early on already, but with multiple players stepping up each night, the future is looking bright for the youthful Blue Angels.

After tonight's matchup, the Blue Angels will have a quick break to spend time with their families. Then it is time to get right back to work as MMU will get set to play the Moody Bible Institute on Wednesday Dec. 3rd. The game against MBI will be played in the Bloechl Center with a 6:00 pm tip time.
