Battle In The Bloechl

Battle In The Bloechl

Mount Mary University (5-15) is closing in on the end of the 2014-15 season. A very tough stretch of opponents are ahead for the Blue Angels to finish the year, first in line is Silver Lake College (18-7). The Lakers will square off with Mount Mary Feb. 11th at 6:00 pm in the Bloechl Center.

It is rematch time for MMU. In the first game, the Lakers were ready from the opening tip. Silver Lake attacked the ball and played high pressure defense as they came away with 21 steals as a team, which translated into 35 turnovers for the Blue Angels. Mount Mary cut down on the turnovers, and started to clean up the glass in the final 20 minutes, but could not catch up to the hot shooting Lakers.

Hitting nearly 50 percent from the floor, and controlling the rebounds 44-31, Silver Lake finished ahead of MMU 88-40. Following that game, the Lakers now lead the series between the schools at 6-2 in the NCAA era.

As of right now, the Blue Angels are hitting one of the deepest parts of their schedule, playing their fifth game in a week. Taylor Baumgart (So./Burlington, Wis.) has been playing through the pain and the grind of the season. The underclassmen has cut down on her turnovers and has become more and more selective with her shots. Most recently, Baumgart had her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds in 38 minutes.

As Baumgart heats up, so does her teammates. Watch out for the performance of Chrisandra Freeman (Fr./Cedar Rapids, Iowa) when she at the Bloechl. The rookie is averaging 15.1 points per game on the Blue Angels home court this year. Along with her great offense, Freeman has been cleaning up the glass in a convincing way averaging a team leading 8.2 rebounds per game.

A short rest for the Blue Angels, but they will be back at it Sunday Feb. 15th at 1:00 pm. An afternoon match-up where Mount Mary will host UC Santa Cruz for the first time in school history.
