MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University Blue Angels basketball team took some serious notice in the Association of Division III Independents this season, as Chrisandra Freeman (Fr./Cedar Rapids, Iowa) won the All-Independent's Rookie of the Year for 2014-15. Along with the ROY, the Blue Angels sent three players to the All-Independent Second Team and Honorable Mention Team respectively.
Freeman finished the season in the top 15 in AD3I in four major categories this season; 14.1 points per game (fifth), 7.8 rebounds per game (seventh), 2.1 assists per game (11th) and 1.3 steals per game (12th).
Freeman also added to her résumé five double-doubles; three of those propelled the Blue Angels to victory. Her outstanding performance this year earned her a spot on the All-Independent Second Team.
In addition to the stellar play of Freeman, the Blue Angels counterparts to the "Rookie Trio" Becky Onan (Fr./Grafton, Wis.) and Jasmine Meyer (Fr./Lansing, Kan.) earned honors on the All-Independent Honorable Mention Team.
Onan was a major presence on the defensive end, and cleaning up the glass averaging 1.4 blocks per game (fourth in AD3I), and 6.3 rpg. Onan added 8.0 ppg for her Blue Angels, good enough for third on her team.
Meyer closed out her season with some big numbers offensively. A post presence that brought 9.3 ppg with a team leading 42 percent field goal percentage. Meyer also took care of the boards, taking down 5.6 rpg, and took care of the ball as her 1.1 turnovers per game was the best mark on her team.
"Chrisandra is very deserving of this recognition. She stepped up her game to become a consistent scoring threat for us night in and night out." Coach Marc Heidorf added, "…this is a nice way to cap off a solid start to her college career and I am looking forward to seeing what she has in store for a 'second act' next season!"
The Trio was responsible for 67 percent of the Blue Angels scoring, and over half of the teams rebounds.
