Lumberjills Take Victory

MILWAUKEE – Today at the Bloechl Center, Mount Mary University lost to visiting Northland 64-28. The loss moves the Blue Angels to 1-6 on the season, and gives the Lumberjills a 5-5 record before the bulk of conference play begins.

With 7:11 remaining in the first quarter, the Blue Angels put in the first bucket as Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) nailed a close shot while getting fouled. After Onan knocked down the free throw the Blue Angels went up 3-0. The Lumberjills went on a 14-5 run to end the first quarter, and they would not surrender it after that.

A much closer second quarter saw the Blue Angels take better shots and control the ball more consistently. Going 3-of-9 from the floor, MMU put up 10 points in the frame for their most productive quarter. Jess Runge (Jr./Freedom, Wis.) had her best quarter dropping five points and pulling in a rebound.

After only scoring two points in the third quarter, the Blue Angels got things going more in the fourth frame as they shot 4-of-13 from the field. MMU also had the fewest team turnovers in the fourth with five.

Onan led the offense with 13 points, shooting 5-of-16 from the field, and also finished with a team leading six rebounds, two steals and four blocks.

Runge added seven points for the Blue Angels while pulling down three boards and adding one steal.

For the Lumberjills, Nicole Huber had a huge night off the bench scoring a team leading 12 points and five assists, and helping out her team with five rebounds.

Defensively, Mckayla Waggoner grabbed six steals on her way to 11 points for Northland.

As a team, the Blue Angels forced 20 Northland turnovers while seven of those were forced via steal. While the Lumberjills only forced six more turnovers, Northlands 26 points off of turnovers could be the difference as MMU generated 5 points off turnovers.

Following tonight's game at the Bloechl Center, the Blue Angels will head to Illinois Tech for a game Saturday. Tip off at the Keating Sports Complex is 2:00 pm. For the eighth straight game, live video and live stats will be available at mtmaryathletics.com.
