Sabercats Stave Off Blue Angels

Sabercats Stave Off Blue Angels

MILWAUKEE – Host Mount Mary University lost to Maranatha Baptist University 62-39 today at the Bloechl Center. The loss for the Blue Angels gives them a record of 2-7 on the year, while the Sabercats move to 6-6 after today.

The game started off with both teams playing stingy defense. While the first point was not scored until one minute into the game, the first field goal of the game did not drop until the 7:41 mark in the first quarter when Shandrieka Richardson (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.) setup Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) with an open jumper.

MMU scored 17 points in the first while holding the Sabercats to 12, then the second quarter saw MBU flip the tables as they scored 16 to the Blue Angels eight heading into halftime with a 28-25 MBU lead.

Down, the Blue Angels clamped down defensively to start the half. Holding the Sabercats to just nine points in the third quarter meant a two point game going into the final frame.

As the game continued to grind away, the Sabercats deep bench continued to press and run the court for the final 10 minutes. While MMU took care of the ball, only committing two team turnovers in the quarter, the Blue Angels shot 2-of-17 from the floor scoring four points in the frame as the Sabercats 7-of-15 sealed the Maranatha victory.

"Maranatha had a smart game plan. With a deeper bench, they could afford to force a quicker tempo and try to wear us down." Head Coach Marc Heidorf went on, "I thought we did a great job of hanging and playing our game for three quarters. The fourth just got away from us a little bit."

Stacy Reinke led the game with a 14 point, 10 rebound double-double for the Sabercats. Teammate Hanna Glaze recorded a double-double herself with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Onan led the Blue Angels with 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
Fellow Blue Angel Jess Runge (Jr./Freedom, Wis.) scored seven points while dishing out six assists and pulling in Runge's season high six steals. Teammate and fellow guard Shandrieka Richardson also scored seven while swiping three steals of her own.
Coach Heidorf, "I asked our leaders to step up in this game and I really felt that Jess, Dreeks [Richardson], and Becky, put together a very solid performance displaying not just physical but also mental toughness."
The Blue Angels will test that mental toughness again in just under 24 hours as MMU plays host to visiting Andrews University out of Berrien Springs, Mich. Tipoff is set for 3:00 pm Jan 24 at the Bloechl Center. Live stats and live video will be available at mtmaryathletics.com.
