Lakers Late Push Nabs Win

MANITOWOC, Wis. – The Mount Mary University Blue Angels lost to Silver Lake College tonight 60-21 at the UW-Manitowoc Gymnasium. The win for the Lakers gives them a 14-4 record while the Blue Angels now sit at 2-9 on the season.

The game started off with the Lakers attacking early and often. The hurried pace on defense led to quick but effective offensive sets for SLC.  Taking a 10-0 lead, with 3:47 left to go in the quarter, Jess Runge (Jr./Freedom, Wis.) found a soft spot in the Lakers defense and hit an open Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) to get the Blue Angels on the board 10-2.

Leading 15-7 to begin the second quarter, the Lakers continued to press and trap defensively. While SLC only shot 30.0 percent from the field, the Blue Angels eight turnovers in the quarter allowed the Lakers to extend the lead and take a 28-14 lead into the lockerroom.

The press continued by the Lakers, but the Blue Angels strengthened up their defense in the third quarter. Holding the opposition to 4-of-17 from the floor held the Lakers to just 12 points in the quarter.

The Lakers continued to play full-court press defense, and held the Blue Angels to two points in the final frame. MMU shot 1-of-13 from the field in the final 10 minutes which led to a 60-21 final.

Raelyn Woock led the game with 16 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Fellow Lakers Kaela Cheesman and Amanda Kudick scored nine and seven points respectively while combining for five steals.

Leading the Blue Angels again was Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) with eight points 10 rebounds and a career high six blocks to add to her Great South Athletic Conference lead.

Teammate Jess Runge shot 3-of-7 from the field to add six points and recording a pair of steals.

The Blue Angels will now prepare for their road contest against Emmaus Bible College Sat. Jan. 30. MMU defeated the Eagles in OT earlier this season, and are 3-0 all-time against Emmaus. The game in Dubuque, Iowa is set for a 4:00 pm tipoff and will be available via live stats at mtmaryathletics.com.
