Lakers End Blue Angels Streak

Lakers End Blue Angels Streak

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University basketball team lost to visiting Silver Lake College 74-38 tonight at the Bloechl Center. The loss ends the Blue Angels two game win streak and sets the season record at 4-12 (0-1) for MMU.

To open up the game, the Lakers (19-4) attacked the basket and took advantage of any opening within 10 feet of the hoop. Making 9-of-15 from the field with seven coming off of assists, SLC took a 21-8 lead after the first quarter.

SLC continued to slash and attack the bucket scoring 19 in the quarter with only three free throws and no 3-point field goals. MMU attacked the hoop as well resulting in 4-of-6 from the charity stripe and 3-of-13 from the field resulting in a 40-18 score at half.

A big lift from the bench in the third when Madeline Smith (Jr./Minnetonka, Minn.) went 2-of-3 to lead the Blue Angels offense in the frame.

The fourth quarter saw the biggest offensive output for MMU hitting 5-of-17 from the field. Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) went 2-of-6 from the floor with 1-of-4 from 3-point land to lead the attack in the quarter.

Even though the teams shot relatively even in the fourth, both with five field goals made, the Lakers got the advantage from the free throw line outscoring MMU 16-11.

"Not the result we were looking for but I would stop short of calling this a 'step backward'." Blue Angels Head Coach Marc Heidorf explained, "We came in banged up and undermanned. But nobody on this crew used that as an excuse to quit, nobody used it as a reason to not give absolutely everything we had."

As usual, the Lakers spread the scoring from bench to starters as 32 of SLC's 74 points came off the bench. Raelyn Woock led the way with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

MMU was led by Madeline Smith who went 6-of-10 from the floor scoring 12 with five rebounds and three steals. Teammate Tajah Williams (Fr./Milwaukee, Wis.) was right behind her with nine points and four rebounds.

"I don't think we're looking at a 're-group', we're looking at this as a 're-load'." Coach Heidorf went on, "The kids are going to get a couple of well-deserved days off, we will come back on the flip side of the weekend refreshed and ready to finish the regular season strong."

Following tonight's game, the Blue Angels will prepare for rival Maranatha Baptist University. The game is set for Mon. Feb. 15 with a 7:00 pm tipoff in Watertown, Wis.
