Stars Stifle Blue Angels

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Dominican University Stars (6-12) defeated the Mount Mary University women's basketball team by a final score of 68-49 tonight at the Igini Sports Forum. The loss gives the Blue Angels a record of 4-8 on the season as they continue their three game stretch on the road.

Keeping pace with the Stars in the first quarter, the Blue Angels forced four Dominican turnovers in the frame, and although their opponent hit 7-of-17 from the field, MMU went 6-of-6 from the free throw line to keep the game close. Becky Onan (Jr./Grafton, Wis.) went 4-of-4 in the quarter and Jess Runge (Sr./Freedom, Wis.) went the remaining 2-of-2 from the free throw line as the first quarter ended 16-13.

Dominican stretched the slim lead into a 37-25 score at the half. The Stars attacked the interior court and hit 56.3 percent from the field in the second quarter to inflate that lead.

In the third quarter, Star Forward Timiya Ray hit 3-of-3 from the 3-point line on her way to scoring 11 points in the quarter alone; Ray finished with 22. The forward also added three blocks in the quarter to keep her 2.7 blocks per game average on the season. The Stars scored 24 to the Blue Angels 12 in the frame to further the lead.

Freshman Brooke Uebersetzig (Greenwood, Ind.) led the Blue Angel charge in the final 10 minutes. The rookie hit 3-of-4 from the free throw line on her way to scoring five, just two points shy of the Stars team total in the fourth quarter.

"We have given a lot of lip service to the pitfalls of this time of year, both mental and physical and the focus/mental toughness it takes to navigate to the finish line." Mount Mary Head Basketball Coach Marc Heidorf added, "Tonight we had that point driven home to us for four quarters."

Onan and Uebersetzig led the offensive charge. Onan finished the game with 13 points, five rebounds, one steal, one assists and one block. Uebersetzig scored 10 points while pulling down three rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Taylor Yordt (So./Omaha, Neb.) supplied a spark off the bench scoring a season high seven points as she went 3-of-4 from the field and 1-of-1 from the free throw line.

"We have a chance this weekend to learn something about ourselves," added coach Heidorf. "Will we learn that lesson or will we wind up back in school. This is a strong group. We will bounce back."

After tonight, the Blue Angels will have a day off before traveling to Michigan for a two game road trip. The first stop will be against Grace Bible College (8-8) in a late season rematch. The game against the Tigers is set for Sat. Jun. 28 at 12:00. Stay tuned to mtmaryathletics.com for links to live video for this weekend's games.
