Preview Dominican vs MMU

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University women's basketball team travels to River Forest, Ill. to take on the Stars of Dominican University tonight at the Igini Sports Forum. The 7:00 pm game, will be the first meeting between these schools in over seven seasons. Live video and statistics will be available for tonight's contest. (Check here at game time.)

Failing to extend their four game winning streak in their last contest, the Stars (5-12) are averaging 49.4 points per game with a field goal percentage of 32.2. Much like the Blue Angels who are 3-0 when scoring 70 or more points, Dominican is 4-0 when scoring over 60 points this season. Not surprising that the more potent offensive games translate into wins, however, the majority of those high octane scoring affairs have been on the confines of the respective team's home court.

The Blue Angels are 3-1 since beginning 2017. Most recently the Blue Angels defeated Robert Morris University Peoria (3-9) 62-53 at the Bloechl Center. Making 15-of-24 free throws as a team, 9-of-16 in the fourth quarter, the Blue Angels were able to resist the late comeback attempt from the Eagles giving MMU a 4-7 overall record on the season.

This season, the Blue Angels are averaging 54.8 points per game while shooting 37.7 percent from the field. Making the effort on both sides of the court, MMU also averages 9.2 steals per game as a team.

Becky Onan (Jr./Grafton, Wis.) and Jess Runge (Sr./Freedom, Wis.) have been a big reason for the large number of steals this year. Onan's 2.3 steals per game and Runge's 2.1 are good enough for eighth and 11th, respectively, in the Association of Division III Independents rankings.

While the Stars spread the scoring around evenly, the post players for Dominican are effective shot blockers. Forward Timiya Ray leads the team with 2.7 blocks per game; freshmen Nyema Burns and Mia Bradley average 1.6 and 1.0 blocks per game respectively.

Leading on both ends of the court for MMU, Onan and Runge are responsible for just over 50 percent of the team's scoring in 2016-17. Onan averages 14.2 points per game and Runge 13.4. A recent surge from both players as Runge has set her NCAA scoring high twice in four games, 24 points, while Onan has scored 20 or more points in her last three games.
