Preview Andrews vs MMU

Berrien Springs, Mich. – The Mount Mary University women's basketball team is getting ready to play Andrews University (3-12) today at the Johnson Gymnasium. The 4-9 Blue Angels look to tip off with the Cardinals at 12:00 pm CST, live coverage will be available here closer to game time.

A relatively new series, these two teams have only played three times in school history. The Cardinals have the slight 2-1 lead after last season when the two teams split a pair of close games. AU defeated MMU by six in January of 2016. Four weeks later, the Blue Angels turned the tables and outlasted the Cardinals 41-34. That win set the school record for fewest points in a victory since joining the NCAA.

Since the beginning of 2017, Blue Angels have revved up the offense. The Blue Angels have scored over 60 points in four of their six games following New Years. Winning three straight games while scoring over sixty points, the Blue Angels have lifted their season average to 54.2 points per game.

As a team MMU is scoring at a 37.2 percent clip from the field and 25.9 percent from beyond the 3-point line. Leading that offensive charge for the second straight season is Becky Onan (Jr./Grafton, Wis.) with 13.9 points per game. Onan also leads MMU in multiple statistical categories like rebounds (7.2), steals (2.1) and blocks (1.2).

The Cardinals sporadic offense is averaging 26.8 points per game this season while shooting 27.0 percent from the field and 14.9 percent from 3-point territory. Although the team has had struggled offensively, a late addition of Kia Williams to the Cardinals roster has brought a recent surge in scoring.

Williams is averaging 18.6 points per game in her brief five game sample. Most recently the sophomore forward scored 19 of the team's 35 total points against St. Mary of the Woods (5-13). Before that, Williams dropped 17 in the Cardinals win over Wright State Lake Campus.

The Blue Angels are getting offense from all over the roster. While Onan has led the charge for MMU this season, Jess Runge (Sr./Freedom, Wis.) is averaging 12.2 points and shooting a team high 50.6 percent from the field. Newcomers Rae Grubbs (Fr./Covington, Ind.) and Brooke Uebersetzig (Fr./Greenwood, Ind.) have stepped up this season averaging 8.8 and 8.2 points per game respectively.

The teams will take the court this afternoon and begin play at 12:00 pm CST. Links to live video and the postgame box score will be made available under basketball's schedule tab at mtmaryathletics.com.
