Lakers Even Series

MANITOWOC, Wis. – The Mount Mary University women's basketball team lost tonight to host Silver Lake College (14-8) at the Hillside Hall Gymnasium by a final score of 76-52. The loss for the Blue Angels gives them a record of 4-11 on the 2016-17 season.

In the first quarter, the Lakers and Blue Angels kept things very close. After the Lakers jumped out to a quick two possession lead, the Blue Angels fought right back cutting away the deficit. Matching nearly every bucket from the opposition, MMU finished the first quarter trailing 16-15.

In the second quarter, the Lakers expanded the lead by scoring 22 points and holding MMU to four. The defense from the Lakers forced the Blue Angels to shoot 7-of-23 from the field in the first 20 minutes.

Shooting 42.9 percent from the field and making 6-of13 in the half from 3-point territory gave the Lakers the 38-19 lead at half.

The Blue Angels came out of the locker room looking to limit the opponent's 3-point field goals and knock down some of their own. After shooting 0-of-6 from beyond the 3-point line in the first half, the Blue Angels hit 4-of-7 in the second half while holding SLC to 2-of-12 from 3-point range.

The offensive surge at halftime led to the Blue Angels outscoring the Lakers in the third quarter 19-16. In the final frame, the Blue Angels added 14 points, but the Lakers stretched the lead out further ending the game at 76-52.

Hailee Kotche of the Lakers led the game scoring 21 points shooting 8-of-11 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Becky Onan (Jr./Grafton, Wis.) led the offensive charge for the Blue Angels with 18 points. Onan hit 7-of-10 from the free throw line and grabbed four rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block.

Teammate Rae Grubbs (Fr./Covington, Ind.) added 14 points with six rebounds as she shot a perfect 2-of-2 from 3-point range. Fellow rookie Brooke Uebersetzig (Fr./Greenwood, Ind.) also sparked the Blue Angels on both ends with 11 points, four rebounds, one steal and one block.

Following tonight's game, the Blue Angels will await Robert Morris University Springfield (0-14) for a contest on Sat. Feb. 4 at 12:00 pm. This will be a rematch against the Eagles as the Blue Angels already defeated RMU Springfield earlier in the season 81-43. The same night Jess Runge had a career night scoring 24 points and shooting 10-of-10 from the field. Watch the Blue Angels take on the Eagles live at mtmaryathletics.com.
