Sabercats Outlast Blue Angels

WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Mount Mary University basketball team lost to host Maranatha Baptist 51-46. The win puts the Sabercats at .500 with an 8-8 record while making the Blue Angels 4-13 on the season.

Quite the even contest from the beginning to the end. The Blue Angels went back and forth with the Sabercats to begin the game, falling behind as much as four, the Blue Angels finished the quarter ahead two. Ariel Oviedo (Jr./Shawano, Wis.) and Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) led the charge in the first with five points each.

The close contest continued in the second frame. The Sabercats shot 5-of-12 from the field in order to tie things up at 22-22 going into the locker room at halftime.

The difference in the game came in the third when MBU shot 7-of-11 from the field while the Blue Angels hit 2-of-11. The 13-2 rebound difference also led to the 17-7 quarter in favor of the Sabercats.

The Blue Angels battled again, and even though they outscored the Sabercats in the quarter, MBU took the win. MMU trailed 49-35 when they started an 11-2 run to end the game in the fourth.

After getting held scoreless against Silver Lake, Jess Runge (Jr./Freedom, Wis.) got her offense going again scoring 11 and kept her defense up with four steals. Oviedo scored 10 while pulling in seven rebounds and four steals.

Becky Onan led the offense with 18 points. Onan pulled in six rebounds and added to her defensive totals with three blocks and two steals.

"It was a good battle tonight." Blue Angels Head Basketball Coach Marc Heidorf went on, "One bad stretch in the 3rd and missed opportunities from the charity stripe did us in. However to the last minute we battled. That's become a trademark of this crew and why I think we are still improving this deep into February."

After the loss, the Blue Angels will prepare for "Senior Night", in honor of Shandrieka Richardson (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.). MMU and Richardson will host Moody Bible Institute for the final home game of the 2015-16 season. Live stats and live video will be available at mtmaryathletics.com.
