Archers Nab Late Victory

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University basketball team lost to visiting Moody Bible Institute 51-48 tonight at the Bloechl Center. The stands were packed for the Blue Angels final home game of the season where fans honored Shandrieka Richardson (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.) for "Senior Night" while also enjoying "Pizza Wars". At the end of the exciting night, the Archers walked away 3-15 on the season while making MMU 4-14 (0-1).

Less than two weeks ago the Blue Angels started a game against the Archers off 9-of-9 from the floor. Tonight, the Blue Angels did not have the same streak, but came out hitting 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line for an 18-9 lead after the first.

The Archers tried to level the deficit in the second, but the Blue Angels defense held true forcing four steals in the quarter and limiting the opposition to 5-of-17 from the field. MMU held a 31-20 lead going into the half.

MMU slowed down in the third as Head Coach Marc Heidorf pointed out, "We just got cold in the third quarter, we settled for jumpers and weren't able to get it back even though we fought throughout the game. Moody just executed better, and we ran out of time."

The Blue Angels shot 3-of-17 from the field in the third while giving up five offensive rebounds. The flip-flop in scoring made it 37-32 with MMU in the lead to end the third.

Moody Bible turned on the offense in the fourth quarter, scoring 19 points as the team shot 7-of-13 from the field. The Archers 7-2 run to start the frame grabbed the lead with 5:39 left to go.

Olivia Hunter led the game with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Her fellow Archer, Kaleigh Krause, added 11 points with eight rebounds and three steals.

Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) led the Blue Angels with 18 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four blocks. Jess Runge (Jr./Freedom, Wis.) pitched in with 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

Richardson finished her final NCAA game at the Bloechl Center with seven points, three assists and one steal.

Now the Blue Angels will turn around and head to Berrien Springs, Mich. to play Andrews University. The finale of the 2015-16 regular season will begin 6:30 pm CST on the campus of Andrews. Post-game coverage and stats will be available at mtmaryathletics.com.
